Kona
Mountain Coffee
The kona coffee is the one
which a special of it’s kind. It is grown only in one place in the world.
The region where
the coffee is grown and cultivated is a mountain area which was volcanic
many decades ago and all the lava that had flowed had made the soil rich
and most suitable for the cultivation of Kona Mountain coffee. It is a
very small area of land where this unique coffee is grown and coffee
grown in any other part of Hawaii cannot be classified as Kona coffee.
North and South Kona region on the western side of the big island of
Hawaii is what this area comprises of and where your favorite coffee
grows and flourishes under ideal climate conditions and very rich soil.
Coffee has been
grown in this region from the year 1828 a century and more of experience
has made the farmers who have been cultivating this crop for generations
establish an emotional bonding with the crop. The mountainous slopes of
Hualalai and Mauna Loa which are at elevations of 500 to 2500 feet
provide the most ideal conditions for the cultivation of coffee. The
weather which is bright and sunny in the morning with cloud cover and
rain in the afternoon and frost free conditions in the night let this
plant blossom and prosper. There are different types of Kona Mountain
coffee each with a taste entirely unique and different from the other.
As the picking of
the coffee beans is still done through hands only the ripe coffee
cherries are picked and others left on the plant to ripen. The beans are
monitored daily and an experienced picker will be able to correctly
ascertain when the beans can be picked and they will be able to pick up
beans to fill a 100 pound bag. Once the beans are picked they are left
to dry and sorted as per the size and shape of the bean.
The freshness of
the mountains and the purity in its air can also be felt in the Kona
coffee. A lot of people have hanged to the Kona Mountain coffee once
they have tasted it as they feel there is none like it.
